Obedience is Better

And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.  1 Samuel 15:2

Yesterday we experienced a time when obedience and faithfulness was challenged. On the last song of our worship set I knew within, within my spirit, that what I had planned for the pulpit was not the exact word God was wanting for His people. This can be an unsettling and challenging proposition in many ways. With only minutes between this moment and when the preaching would ensue, there was much trust required in simply laying down what was prepared for what God desires of us. Laying down something good for what is best. Laying down our desires for His ultimate purpose. Something expressed every week is how we gather to worship Jesus. To make much of Him and Him alone. Yet how often we just plow through with our own initiative and dismiss what He may desire to do among us, simply because we are not open to His leading and moving.

The prophet Samuel reminded the people in the above verse that ultimately obedience is better than sacrifice. It is clear that, much like our lives today, the peoples hearts had become a fixed in routine. Bring sacrifices to cover sins, give offerings before the Lord because He requires it. Going through the motions. Singing songs of praise never giving thought of God’s great grace. “Sermonating,” the words of men and never hearing or moving to the voice of the Lord. So many similarities.

What was said yesterday was timely and what God desired to say to us. As the messenger that day, would I say it was my best presentation? Likely not. But, it’s not about me right? What I would say is that what was said was exactly the word God knew we needed for that time in our lives. So, as told to the Israelites, obedience is better than sacrifice.

How are you being opened to being truly obedient to God’s leading and guiding? Are you open to the reality that he may desire to change your plans? Are you open to laying down what you may think is better for what God is deeming best? He desires our obedience. Our obedience to His leading demonstrates and exemplifies who has our hearts affections. Obedience is better than sacrifice.
